Why are there 3 drag coefficients?

How does the drag coefficient work? Does each axis of the vehicle have it's own drag coefficient? Why is it done this way?

Fluid Drag is a resistive force where its magnitude depends, among other things, on the shape of the face of the object that penetrate the fluid. We can define such coefficient along the three different (local) axis of a collision geometry.
